How much do home health therapists make in Southern California?
By Sonia Chopra Dhir, PT
Therapists should compare more than a headline rate. Region, driving time, visit mix, documentation expectations, communication, and reliable support all affect whether home health works in real life.
A full-time caseload in home health is generally considered 30-35 visits per week. In LA and Ventura County, high-volume PTs and OTs can gross about $175,000-$210,000 per year. High-volume STs/SLPs can gross about $170,000-$240,000 per year, depending on visit mix, region, availability, and onboarding review.
The calculator can help you compare regions and visit mix before onboarding. Exact rates and referral details are reviewed directly with HHL.
Common questions
What affects home health therapy earnings?
Visit type, discipline, weekly volume, region, and team structure all affect monthly earnings. SOC visits usually pay the most, followed by evaluations. Therapists who work as part of a care team with a PTA or COTA may be able to build higher monthly volume than therapists who only take follow-up visits.
Why do OASIS visits pay differently?
A Start of Care, or SOC, opens the case and can be completed by a PT, OT, or SLP when appropriate. This process is analogous to a formal hospital admission for home health services. SOC documentation used to take about 1.5 to 2 hours, but with Roger AI support it may take about 30-45 minutes for trained clinicians. That means therapists can spend time closer to an evaluation visit while earning more for the SOC visit. Ask HHL if you want to be trained.
How should therapists estimate weekly income?
Use the HHL earnings calculator to estimate monthly income by region, discipline, and weekly visit goal. To estimate weekly income, divide the monthly estimate by 4.3.
